One of my favourite interior styles is Scandinavian. From Danish Delux to Ikea, the Nordic nook of the world has produced some amazing designs, which have been embraced by many homes in all corners of the globe. The look is a minimal and natural palette as your backdrop – lots of bare or whitewashed woods – punctuated with distinct soft furnishings in geometric and bold patterns. And don’t forget the sleek contoured furniture, which is both stunning and functional. It’s no wonder Nordic design has stood the test of time and remains one of the most copied styles to this day.
White is huge in Scandi decorating. Whitewashed floors and natural woods as well as white walls to offset your cool Scandi homewares are a great starting point to achieving this look. Try Dulux White on White for a clean and bright canvas.
Ever noticed how fabulous the fabric section in Ikea is? Scandi textiles and prints tend to be bright and playful with a simple, geometric naivete. Or they’re cool and abstract. Against bare white walls Scandi fabrics really pop. Try whipping up some simple cushions in scandi vintage tea towels or other bright fabrics for a true Nordic touch.
Yes I am! I’m such a sucker for the clean lines and rounded contours of Danish furniture. Not only is it stunning, but it’s comfortable and compact and suitable for very small homes (like mine). Modular couches are a popular Nordic design and look great with a smaller, feature chair with a beautiful shape and groovy fabric.
Swedes and Danes are renowned for their quirky humour and quirky style. Look for unique glassware, prints, and even a little taxidermy to inject some Scandi style into your home.
